ROADMAP TO HOMESCHOOLING GUIDE
If you’re homeschooling and wondering whether your child can still go to university… you’re not alone.
Recently, I had a conversation with a parent who was worried about just that. She wanted to give her child every opportunity—but wasn’t sure if stepping outside the school system might limit them.
Let me be clear: homeschoolers absolutely can get into uni. And there’s not just one path to get there—there are many.
I wasn’t homeschooled myself, but I am living proof that alternative pathways work. Here’s my story:
I left school halfway through Year 11 to work at Maccas. At the time, I thought that was the end of the road. My dream of becoming a teacher? Gone.
But not long after, I enrolled in a Certificate III in Children’s Services. That led to work in childcare, which led to a Diploma… and that Diploma met the entry requirements for a Bachelor’s of Early Years Education.
Spoiler alert: I didn’t stop there. I went on to do a Master’s in Education, too (but that’s a story for another day!).
✨ No ATAR.
✨ No senior exams.
✨ No performing just for credits.
What I was doing instead? Gaining real-world experience in the exact field I wanted to work in.
And here’s what I want every homeschool parent to know: this wasn’t a one-off. There are so many different ways to access higher education.
Here are a few more options:
Certificate or Diploma pathways via TAFE or RTOs
Bridging/prep programs that lead directly to degrees
STAT testing for mature-aged or non-traditional learners
Portfolio-based entry (perfect for project-based or self-directed kids)
Homeschool-specific entry options offered by some universities
If your child wants to go to uni—they absolutely can. Let’s stop pretending there’s only one “right” path.
With love & fire,
Acushla 💛
